Halloween Safety Tips for Kids

By Paetra Lafleur October 23, 2017

Halloween is a holiday like none other. You get to live our your wildest dreams and become whomever your heart desires. This is most true when it comes to our children. For one night, they get to put on a costume, paint their faces, and receive candy from friendly neighboorhood faces. But before the kids run out the door for their yearly candy fix, please take the time to help them remember that safety comes first.

With Halloween just around the corner and trunk or treat festivals starting this week, I have compiled a list of safety tips to help make this Halloween Spooktacular for the kiddos! To keep your kids safe, remind them to:

  • Always carry a flashlight so that you are visible to cars. Wearing something reflective on your costume or your treat bag can help cars spot you as well. Wearing a glow stick is another option.
  • If walking on roads, always walk facing oncoming traffic. But if you can stay off the road completely, that is the best choice.
  • Never cross the street between parked cars or from behind something that could obstruct a drivers view from seeing you clearly.
  • When possible, cross the street using a crosswalk and always look both ways before crossing.
  • Only go trick-or-treating at houses with porch lights on so that they always stay visible.
  • Trick0-or-treating in groups is the best option.
  • Never go inside the home of a stranger.
  • Never get in the car or accept candy from a stranger.
  • And only eat candy that is in its original wrapper in order to prevent digesting candy that has been tampered with.

The most accidents on Halloween involve safety issues and traffic. Even though some of the tips might be no-brainers, they are easy to forget when you are in character and only have one thing on your mind: candy. So to keep this Halloween incident free, remind them that safe is the way to be!
